Summary
Due to oilsands mining, the environmental risks associated with polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) have become a significant concern in the Athabasca River basin (ARB) in Alberta. In collaboration with Alberta Environment and Parks (Dr. Keegan Hicks) and Environment and Climate Change Canada, we aim to develop a suite of modeling tools to simulate PACs in surface water at the basin scale and predict PAC concentrations in fish tissue. This work will be linked to assessing the potential exposure risks of PACs to both fish and humans, thereby supporting decision-making regarding the potential release of oilsands processed water and other pollution control measures.
