H2 Uh-Oh: Emerging Water Contaminants and Our Urban Environment | Energy Talks
With emerging water contaminants becoming a significant concern, urban environments are facing unique challenges. In this Energy Talks session, Dr. Maricor Arlos, an assistant professor in Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Alberta, discusses the challenges posed by micropollutants in urban water systems.
Dr. Arlos explores the fate and transport of micropollutants, including pharmaceuticals, personal care products, hormones, pesticides, and industrial chemicals, in surface waters and their effects on aquatic organisms. Her presentation highlights the critical issue of how these contaminants, even in extremely low concentrations, can bioaccumulate and cause significant ecological disruptions.
Using real-world data, Dr. Arlos analyzes the implications of micropollutants on water quality management, sustainable treatment methods using waste materials from other industries, and collaborative efforts with Indigenous communities to address water insecurity. The talk also covers the diverse approaches in monitoring and treating wastewater across Canada, with a particular focus on initiatives in Calgary.
Dr. Maricor Arlos brings her extensive background in Environmental Engineering and Biology, along with her international experience, to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of water quality management and the innovative solutions developed to tackle these emerging challenges.
This online speaker series is presented in partnership with Future Energy Systems and the Edmonton Public Library. Energy Talks provides an opportunity for you to engage with researchers and learn more about their work.

Future Energy Systems is a $75 million research program at the University of Alberta, funded by the Canada First Research Excellence Fund. More than 130 researchers, 600 graduate students, post docs and other highly qualified personnel in nine faculties are studying the energy transition in over 90 different projects. Our researchers seek to develop energy technologies of the future, improve today’s energy technologies, and understand the transition between the two. We are also studying the effects of energy transition on society, the economy, and the environment.
The University of Alberta respectfully acknowledges that we are located on Treaty 6 territory, a traditional gathering place for diverse Indigenous peoples including the Cree, Blackfoot, Metis, Nakota Sioux, Iroquois, Dene, Ojibway/ Saulteaux/Anishinaabe, Inuit, and many others whose histories, languages, and cultures continue to influence our vibrant community.
