Former Arlos Lab Members
Kia Barrow, MSc, Fall 2022
Kia is the first MSc student that Dr. Arlos supervised. Kia completed her MSc in Environmental Engineering in September 2022. In light of recent developments regarding the potential discharge of treated oil sands process-affected water (OSPW), Kia's research looks at predicting the ecotoxicological impacts of treated and untreated OSPW on receiving aquatic environments. She is passionate about water quality as she believes that no community, especially BIPOC communities, should be forced to live in physical environments where they do not have easy access to clean water. This encourages her while doing her research as she hopes to see what the impacts of the treated OSPW will be on the Athabasca River, an important river system for animals and humans alike.
Afrida Nurain, MSc, Fall 2023
Afrida completed her MSc in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Alberta in Fall 2022. Prior to moving to Canada, she completed her undergrad in Environmental Sciences at Jahangirnagar University, Bangladesh. Her research was focused on investigating the sorption/desorption mechanisms of target organic compounds in micro and nano plastics in the aqueous environment and fish tissue. Afrida loves to read adventure and mystery fiction.
Daniela Pulgarin Zapata, MSc, Fall 2023
Daniela completed here MSc studies in our department in Fall 2023. Daniela is originally from Colombia. Her research focus is on the bioaccumulation potential of emerging substances of concern. Daniela worked at the artificial streams facility located in Advancing Canadian Water Assets (ACWA) in Calgary and has developed sample preparation and extraction methods for analysis of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in a variety of environmental matrices such as water, sediments, fish, biofilms, and macroinvertebrates.
Fei Cheng, MSc, Fall 2023
Fei (she/her) is an international student from Guangzhou, China. She obtained her Bachelor of Science in Civil Environmental Engineering in 2021 and MSc in Environmental Engineering in 2023 at the University of Alberta. She is particularly interested in investigating the potential and feasibility of treating and reusing industrial waste and converting waste into beneficial products. She likes walking around the campus and enjoying the beautiful North Saskatchewan River scenery in her spare time.
Seth Bumagat, NSERC USRA Summer 2021
Seth is an undergraduate co-op student pursuing a B.Sc in Chemical Engineering. His interests lie in the intersections of engineering and public health and started working with the Arlos Research Lab after receiving a Dean's Research Award. During the tenure of his DRA, he sought to discover spatiotemporal trends of pharmaceuticals in the Bow River in Calgary using data from a municipal partner. During his co-op term (which is partially funded by an NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Award), he support the Arlos Research Lab's efforts to monitor the fate and transport of micropollutants in the Bow River. His favourite show is Modern Family!
Demi Meier, I-STEAM Pathway, Summer 2021
Demi spent her summer 2021 with the Arlos Lab supporting Afrida's work on nanoplastics. Her time with us was funded by the I-STEAM Pathway program at the UofA. She graduated from Animal Health Studies in 2022 and came back with us for another eight months as a Research Assistant, helping us with a number of research activities including field work.
Jaime Hicks, EIT, MSc Fall 2024
Jaime completed her Master of Science in Environmental Engineering in Fall 2024. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering from the University of Alberta. Her MSc thesis focused on the visualization and analysis of data collected during the City of Calgary's Outfall Monitoring Program (2017-2022).
Jingya Pang, MSc Fall 2024
Jingya completed her MSc in Environmental Engineering at the University of Alberta. She finished her undergraduate in Environmental Science at Xi'an Jiaotong University, China. Her interest is the potential and efficiency of advanced adsorbents in reducing the hazardous effects of municipal wastewater on cells. In her spare time, Jingya likes to workout and watch science fiction movies. Jingya will continue her PhD at the University of Waterloo working on Calcined Bauxite Residue as a potential wastewater treatment option.
Jessica Morrison, I-STEAM Pathway, Summer 2023
Jessica Morrison is an Alternative Energy Technologist with a passion for sustainability and renewable energy technology. She recently graduated from the Alternative Energy Technology program at NAIT and is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Technology. Jessica is also experienced in Project Management, leading successful initiatives in her academic and professional career. Throughout her scholarly and occupational endeavors, she has demonstrated a strong commitment to clean energy and a proactive approach to achieving her goals. Jessica hopes to make a positive impact in the industry by developing innovative solutions to environmental challenges. In her free time, she enjoys exploring the natural beauty of Alberta.
